Background:

The Food, Income, and Markets Programme established an operations research project in 2010 to define and test indicators of humanitarian crisis in urban informal settlements. 


This was borne out of the need to monitor conditions in urban slums and be able to identify and target populations in crisis with humanitarian support. 
The first two years of the project has collected extensive evidence for the performance of various indicators and resulted in an indicator framework which the project is now seeking to operationalize and scale-up in major urban centers.

Job Summary:

The prospective candidate will contribute to the development of the framework to monitor slow-onset urban emergencies. 
Due to the large amounts of data being collected on a routine basis, data-driven analysis is a constant priority for the initiative. 
The consultant will jointly work with a small team to understand trends and patterns of the urban poor. 
In addition the analyst will support on-going research currently being undertaken by the team and external partners. 
The primary functions of the data analyst will be twofold;

1) To support ongoing areas of research
 
2) To undertake data analysis on both prospective new rounds of data collection and retrospective analysis.

We are looking for someone who enjoys solving challenging problems in a group setting. 
Strong communication skills are needed to explain complex technical concepts to different audiences.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Analyze collected data, produce preliminary and in depth reports on results
  • Contribute to scientific papers for publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Contribute to developing a framework for detecting slow-onset urban emergencies
  • Provide research support to senior researchers as needed
  • Work with project coordinator to develop presentation, factsheets and policy briefs on results of research
Deliverables:
  • Data Cleaning for each round of data collection
  • Provide research assistance to Project Coordinator and Data Analyst
  • Background papers on food security and food price data
  • Aggregate relevant external data sources for cross-verification of results
Job Specification:

Essential:
  • Masters’ Degree in relevant field (Development Economics, Statistics). Bachelors with significant experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with large datasets
  • Training in research methods, statistical analysis and complex survey design and analysis
  • Solid research and data analysis skills. Should be able to write literature reviews if required.
  • Working knowledge of STATA, R (R is strongly preferred)
  • Experience with analysis of stratified cluster samples and time series data analysis would be an asset
  • Experience working in an urban slum environment and working with government partners
Desirable:
  • Experience in designing and implementing evaluations and operational research, using both quantitative and qualitative methods

The position will be based in Nairobi and will be responsible for Coordination of all medical activities in Marere and Kismayo projects in collaboration with the Field Medical Activity Managers (FMAM) in the projects.
 
Objective of the Position
  • To monitor, supervise, ensure quality and report on all medical activities in Marere and Kismayo projects
  • To be medical supply responsible for both projects in Nairobi and liaise with logistics team on supply issues
  • To participate in field visits, if possible, in order to evaluate and improve quality of services
  • To provide national staff training in Nairobi, via telemedicine and directly in project if possible

Main Responsibilities
  • To provide overall support to Mowasco management  in developing and implementing a pro-poor strategy,  and nurturing an Informal Settlements Department within the company
  • To train and support the staff of the Informal Settlements Department within Mowasco with regard to the work in the informal areas
  • To ensure successful preparation and delivery of pro-poor WASH activities in Mombasa during fundraising, scoping, development and implementation phases of WSUP projects.
  • To strongly support Mowasco in developing and implementing ambitious, commercial-oriented, water and sanitation strategies to reach the un-served low-income consumers in the city.
  • To support Mowasco in developing, fundraising and implementing innovative, scalable and utility-oriented pro-poor water and sanitation service models in accordance with local context.

  • A minimum of 7 years of demonstrable competence and experience in managing water and sanitation projects within an integrated/community-based, water supply and sanitation project context, for international development organisations.

  • Support in the preparation and minuting of key meetings with partners, the donor and other stakeholders as requested.
  • Under the guidance of the Programme manger ensure programme information is up to date in HelpAge Contract management system.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of donor and organizational reports
  • Provide back stopping to general EWCA office administration as agreed with line manager and Senior Administrative Officer.
  • Perform, from time to time, any other duties required by EWCA RDC in line with extent of authority and expertise.
Extent of Authority
 
The Post holder will make day to day decisions regarding the implementation of their work within an agreed work plan, objectives, deliverables and budget limitations.
 
The post holder will work within all HelpAge contract management guidelines, donor compliance requirements and financial and administrative procedures.

Person Specification
 
Essential
  • Bachelors Degree in Development Studies or related field
  • At least 6 months work experience with an NGO
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Assist in programme monitoring and support in data base management
  • Experience of logistical arrangements and events planning
  • Strong computing skills preferably with knowledge/experience of Word, Excel and Access
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and interest of ageing issues and development in Africa preferred
