Employment at Meru University of Science & Technology

Institutional Profile

Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST) was established as a fully-fledged University in Kenya through the Award of Charter on March 1, 2013 in line with the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012.

The Government of Kenya established Meru University College of Science and Technology as a Constituent College of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology by upgrading Meru College of Technology in 2008. 

MUST is situated 15 km from Meru Town off the Meru-Maua Highway.

The University has also opened a campus in Meru Town at the Hart Towers.

The objective of the University is to
  • play a leading role in the provision of quality and relevant University education;
  • establish sustainable research initiatives that promote societal development;
  • promote the development of Science, Technology and Innovation;
  • benchmark the University with the best practices and standards across the world;
  • develop and manage effective and efficient Human Resources;

  • promote equity and access to University education.

The University Council invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons with excellent credentials to fill the positions of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research and Students Affairs)and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Planning).

The Deputy Vice-Chancellors will report to the Vice-Chancellor and are part of the top management of the University and will have the mandate of establishing a strong academic, research and management foundation for the University.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Planning)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (A,F&P), being in-charge of Administration, Finance and Planning Division of the University, will among other duties:-
  • Provide innovative and creative leadership in the areas of planning, human resource management, financial and physical resource management.
  • Oversee the implementation of all procurement, fiscal, human resources, administrative policies and appropriate procedures to ensure efficient performance and delivery of services at the University in line with the Strategic Plan.
  • Co-ordinate the preparation and implementation of the University budget, prepare financial statements and management reports and ensure that both annual and medium term expenditures are consistent with the Strategic Plan.
  • Co-ordinate the design, implementation, maintenance and development of appropriate human resource policies, procedures and systems that attract, develop and retain qualified and experienced human resources.
  • Maintain good order of the University and ensure proper enforcement of the statutes and regulations.
  • Be in-charge of Project Management and the implementation of the University Physical Master Plan.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective performance management system.

Requirements

An applicant must:
  • Be a holder of an earned Ph.D from a reputable institution of higher learning;
  • Be either a Professor or an Associate Professor, well published and an academic leader in his/her area of specialization.
  • Have at least six (6) years progressive experience in a senior leadership/management position such as Dean/Director, Principal of a Campus, Deputy Principal of a University College or leadership of comparable levels in other institutions.
  • Have demonstrable ability and leadership skills to effectively co-ordinate administration and financial functions of the university, and be familiar with financial planning and accounting procedures.
  • Have demonstrated ability in strategic planning and quality management systems.
  • Have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven success in planning and management.
  • Have excellent understanding of the current trends in university education and training in Kenya and globally and a broad awareness of the factors and conditions shaping the development of university education in Kenya.
  • Be registered with, and be an active member of professional associations in their profession.
  • Be of the highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism and comply with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
  • Obtain clearance from: Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Ethics & Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and have a valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
  • Those with MBA or CPA (K) or equivalent will have an added advantage.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research and Student Affairs)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research and Student Affairs), being in-charge of the Academic Division of the University, will:
  • Provide leadership in the management of Academic Affairs to enhance high academic standards.
  • Promote learning, research and innovation within the institution.
  • Oversee the preparation, implementation and evaluation of academic programmes and regulations.
  • Co-ordinate teaching and academic support for all academic programmes.
  • Co-ordinate the management of examinations, post-graduate studies and research, development of library information and ICT services and the admission of students.
  • Maintain collaboration and linkages with both local and international institutions of higher learning for academic research and innovation programmes.
  • Ensure that the University Senate is properly advised in the development of programmes in conformity with national and international standards and legally recognized professional bodies.
  • Ensure that the University constantly adopts innovative and modern systems for delivery of academic programmes including elearning and distance learning.
  • Co-ordinate student welfare activities.
  • Promote knowledge dissemination to meet the needs of the University and the community through publications and exhibitions.
  • Responsible for research, branding, setting standards, quality assurance/control and capacity building.
  • Protect intellectual assets/property and information through publishing and commercialization of innovations.
  • Mobilize and solicit financial support for research and community linkages from industries, business community and research organizations through fundraising activities.
  • Promote activities that attract and support local and international students.
  • Be answerable to the Vice-Chancellor on the general conduct and discipline of students.

Requirements

An applicant must:
  • Be a holder of an earned Ph.D from a reputable institution of higher learning.
  • Be either a Professor or an Associate Professor, well published and an academic leader in his/her area of specialization.

  • Be a recognized scholar as evidenced by publications in referenced journals, University level books as well as project grants and awards.
  • Have demonstrated competence in academic leadership in an academic/research environment.
  • Have excellent understanding of the current trends in University education and training in Kenya and globally and a broad awareness of the factors and conditions shaping the development of University education in Kenya.
  • Have skills, capacity and determination to initiate and facilitate the development of relevant and quality market and society driven academic programmes.
  • Have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be registered with, and be an active member of professional associations in their profession.
  • Be of the highest ethical standards, integrity and professionalism and comply with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.

Terms & conditions of Service

Successful candidates, for the above positions, will be offered a competitive remuneration package, including house allowance and other benefits in accordance with the Kenya Government Public Service Guidelines.

The appointments for the posts of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors will be for a contractual period of five (5) years renewable for a further period of five (5) years subject to satisfactory performance.
